Some Federal soldiers, like Lt. Col. Allen Fahnestock of the 86th Illinois, purchased their own Henry rifles. On June 27, 1864, at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, Fahnestock lent his Henry to fellow soldier Alason Webber, who used it to provide covering fire as wounded men of the regiment struggled back to their lines. He then kept Confederate troops at bay until protective earthworks were completed. Webber earned the Medal of Honor for his actions. (Courtesy Baxter B. Fite III, 86th Illinois Historian)
