Though the first transpacific air service to Hawaii began in 1935, via Pan American Airways’ Clippers, the real tourist boom didn’t commence until after WWII, when a new generation of airliners made the trip easy and affordable. Check out “Hawaii by Air,” a multifaceted new exhibit exploring the ways air travel has shaped the islands’ culture and commerce, at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum through July 2015.
