The small base at Ngok Tavak, attacked by the North Vietnamese Army in the pre-dawn hours of May 10, 1968,
was defended by a mix of forces, including an Australian training team, U.S. Army Special Forces, South Vietnamese special forces, militiamen from the Nung ethnic group and Marine artillerymen. Australian Capt. John White, second
from left, was the base commander. This photo of Australian and U.S. Special Forces soldiers was taken in April 1968. (AWM P05405.001)
