On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court of the United States overturned decades of American law that held that women had a right to abortion and that states couldn’t outlaw the procedure or abortion clinics. That ruling, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Clinic, has already become a byword for a new era in which individual states may again send women to prison for seeking or having abortions and doctors and nurses for performing them.

It was seen as a watershed moment for religious and anti-abortion groups but as a catastrophe for women’s rights organizations and those who support abortion rights. Others saw in it language that paves the way for repealing gay rights, legal contraceptives and more.
