On May 24, 1889, the 17th Virginia Monument was dedicated at Washington and Prince streets in Alexandria, Va.—28 years to the date Alexandria troops first left the city for Confederate service. It is uncertain whether Hunter (pictured at bottom during and after the war) attended the dedication. The monument was taken down preventatively by the United Daughters of the Confederacy during the controversial summer of 2020.
