For the Drum Corp for of the 10th Veteran Reserve Corps, beating time on the battlefield had become a distant memory by the time this photograph was taken in Washington, D. C., in June 1865. These men are all lucky survivors, casualties of the conflict who have recovered from their wounds and are enjoying a well-deserved rest between practice sessions. For some it’s an opportunity to double on another instrument, like the violin or double bass. Other men are writing home or playing cards. The fellow on the far right strikes a pose with an open book. Meanwhile the drummer in the front row is hard at work,, replacing a drumhead. Sees as though the labor never ends for some folks, even when the fighting is done.
