Even people with just passing knowledge of the American Civil War have likely heard of Andersonville, the infamous Georgia prison camp that became synonymous with misery and death. Far less well-known is Camp Lawton, which replaced Andersonville in the autumn of 1864. Even the exact location of this camp, which was scarcely better than its predecessor, has remained a mystery.
Until now.
After several months of searching, under a cloak of secrecy that resembled a military operation, archaeological evidence has been unveiled placing the fort’s location near Millen in Southeast Georgia.
