THE GEORGIA O’KEEFFE MUSEUM, edited by Peter H. Hassrick (Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 142 pages, $60.00).
In this volume, Peter Hassrick, director of the new Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico–the first museum in the United States to be dedicated to the work of a woman artist of national stature–presents 68 works by O’Keeffe (1887-1986), who has “become something of a national symbol for an honest and pure art.” The full-color reproductions of the paintings, many of which have not been published before, are complemented by more than a dozen photographs of the artist, including several taken by noted photographer Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946), who became O’Keeffe’s husband in 1924. Essays by distinguished art historians attest to the talents of this remarkable woman, who continued working into her nineties.
