FROM COLONIALS TO PROVINCIALS: AMERICAN THOUGHT AND CULTURE 1680-1760, by Ned C. Landsman, Twayne Publishers, 238 pages, $29.95.

Author Ned Landsman draws on a wide range of sources to examine an often neglected period in American history–the years between the seventeenth-century English settlements and the American Revolution–as he provides insight into life in British North America. At that time colonists accepted the fact that their societies were derived from the British Empire, yet they were involved in the gradual development of a new identity and American culture.
