November 30, 2014, marks the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee. Five hours of fighting produced close to 10,000 casualties (killed, wounded and missing), 70% of them Confederates who attacked the Union soldiers’ strong defensive works. Among the Southern casualties were 14 generals; no other battle of the war resulted in so many general officers wounded and killed. It is often said the Battle of Nashville was won at Franklin.
Today, the Franklin Battlefield Trust is working to buy key sections of land in the town of Franklin in order to remove post-war buildings and restore those sections of the town to their 1864 appearance.
