Dear Mr. Guttman,

The attached was found in my husband’s ancestral family photo album.   He believes it depicts his great-great grandfather Capt. John Bush who, according to family lore, was born in Germany, emigrated to Philadelphia and died at Fredericksburg.

In your professional opinion, is his uniform consistent with the Union Army c. 1862?

We will greatly appreciate a note from you, at your convenience.

Many thanks and very best regards,

Linda Spencer

Dear Ms. Spencer,

Civil War Times editor Dana Shoaf confirms it is a U.S. Army uniform. The soldier’s rank at the time was lieutenant—he may have been promoted later, if he survived long enough.

Sincerely,
