Getting ready to leave LZ Digger 1970
Lance Corporal Dick Murphy, Mike Co. 3rd Bn. Fourth Maines Regiment was a "Gung Ho" Marine as it says on his helmet. Arriving in Vietnam on December 14, 1967, he was wounded twice before being killed in action on June 15, 1968.

For some reason I never wrote anything on my helmet camouflage cover. In fact, as you can see in this picture, taken about noon on the first day of the Tet Offensive just outside Bien Hoa City, I didn’t even have a camouflage cover on my helmet. Although the picture is a little washed out after all these years, you can see that the helmet actually looks black. That’s because a few days earlier I used it as a pot over an open fire to boil some eggs that had magically appeared from somewhere. If you look real close, you can see that the helmet’s chin straps are missing. That’s because like a dummy, I accidentally burned them off while boiling the eggs. Maj.Gen.(ret) David T. Trying to upload a photo to your helmet gallery, but your form doesn't seem to work. I don't have a website; why can't I just copy to photo to a blank email and submit it? Why does this have to be complicated?
I don't h ave a picture anymore but I had drawn a picture of a knight chesspiece (ala Paladin in Have Gun, Will Travel) with the words
"Nixon's Hired Guns" underneath. Needless to say it was not well received by the lifers.
Helped information for me, because i need this news. Thanks
