I had always thought that Charles Martel was the first king of the Franks. I checked it out— I was wrong. He was Pepin’s the Short’s father. Altough not the consecrated king of the franks, he was the defacto monarch .Martel is famous in history for defeating the Muslims in the battle of Poitiers, afterward there was never again a threat of muslim invasion of France. Interesting enough there was a second battle of Poitiers in 1356, during the hundred years war.

Pippin suffers the fate of some men who have more famous fathers or sons. Pippin’s father was Charles “the Hammer” Martel and his son was Charlemagne.

Poitiers? I was taught that Charles Martel halted the Moors at Tours.

One-third the way north on the Roman road from Poitiers to Tours, a place now called Moussais-la-Bataille, was where the battle took place.

It is sometimes referred to as Tours and other times as Poitiers. The Battle of Tours is currently perferred to avoid confusion with the 1356 Battle of Poitiers.
