Vicksburg surrendered on July 4, 1863, the Gettysburg campaign ended on July 3,1863. This twin disaster was, if not the beginning of the end,was the end of the beginning for the Confederacy—to coin an expression of a famous Anglo American statesman. As a national holiday July 4 was not celebrated in Vickburg until 1946. The remembrance of war can cast a long shadow.
