Circular saw. A Shaker woman, Tabitha Babbitt, who developed the idea for a sawmill circular saw after noticing half the energy used with crosscut saws was wasted, is generally credited as the inventor of the circular saw, although earlier references exist. Other inventions by the Shakers – officially the United Society of Believers in Christ?s Second Appearing – include the flat broom and cut nails. Shaker leader Ann Lee brought the movement to New York City from England in 1774.
