Veracruz. After capturing Veracruz, the multinational force moved inland towards the capital at Mexico City. They were temporarily halted at Puebla by Republican general Ignacio Zaragoza. With an additional 30,000 reinforcements, they managed to seize Mexico City on June 7, 1863, and placed Maximilian Ferdinand of Austria on the throne, establishing the Second Mexican Empire. In 1867, the monarchy was overthrown and the new empire came to an end.
