Fishguard
Fishguard. The French revolutionary government planned to "liberate" the country people of Britain and foment an uprising against the English aristocracy. The bulk of the French army was elsewhere, with Napoleon, so an Irish-American named Col. William Tate took charge of a ragtag force and set sail for Bristol. Weather conditions forced him to land at Llanwnda near Fishguard, however. His men began pillaging the countryside and were rounded up by the locals. A dozen were captured by a cobbler’s wife named Jemima Nicholas.
