Pennsylvania. The editor of Pottsville’s Miner’s Journal, Benjamin Bannan, wrote that a secret society existed among Irish in the Pennsylvania coalfields in the 1850s and later identified it as the "Molly Maguires," a violent group that fought against landlords in Ireland during the 1840s. After the Civil War, the group was blamed for labor violence. In 1876, several supposed members of the organization were tried and executed in Schuykill County. There is no solid evidence that group members actually called themselves Molly Maguires.
