Philippines. Aguinaldo led Filipinos in a rebellion against Spain, which claimed the islands as its colony. After Spain ceded the islands to the United States after the Spanish-American War of 1898, Aguninaldo believed his country would receive its freedom. Instead, the rebels found a new enemy. Aguinaldo was captured in March 1902, but in the southern regions resistance continued for years afterward.
