Seattle. Workers in the city’s shipyards, disappointed when they did not receive an expected pay hike to make up for the wage controls placed on them by the federal government during World War I, went on strike. Most of the 110 labor unions in the city agreed to join them in a sympathy strike. For six days the city was paralyzed and police and vigilantes, believing the strike was Bolshevik inspired, rounded up known socialists and shut down a labor newspaper.
