I Love Lucy. The 1951 – 52 season introduced 19 new comedies, 17 of which didn’t return the following year. Only Lucy lasted beyond the 1952 – 53 season. Producers had turned down the concept of a show starring Lucy and her husband, Desi Arnaz, so the couple created their own sitcom. It ran for 179 episodes (five years) and ranks among the best-beloved TV programs of all time.
