The American Civil War engagement at Picacho Peak took place in this state.
Arizona. Some 2,350 Union volunteers from California set out in April 1862 to wrest Tucson from Confederate Rangers who had occupied it in February. Union cavalry encountered Rangers near Picacho Peak northwest of Tucson on Apr. 15 and were driven off after a sharp battle. The Californians took Tucson the following month without a fight.
