Justinian I. In his History of the Wars, Book II, Procopius of Caesarea, a Byzantine scholar from Palestine, records "During these times there was a pestilence, by which the whole human race came near to being annihilated". Believed to be the first recorded pandemic of Bubonic Plague, Justinian himself contracted the disease and died on November 14, 565 CE.
