Following Carthage’s loss to Rome in the Second Punic War, Hannibal was elected Suffette, virtually giving him dictatorial power. Under his guidance Carthage paid the war debt placed on it by Rome ahead of schedule, but Rome, fearing Hannibal, set out to assassinate him. He fled, sometimes serving as military advisor to nations that harbored him. He committed suicide in 183 BC.
