1969. In 1969 hostility and violence between Protestants and Catholics became so intense that Great Britain sent troops into Northern Ireland to attempt to restore order. The outlawed Irish Republican Army came into Northern Ireland to protect and encourage Catholics and the Provisional IRA soon began terrorist actions against the British troops and Protestant civilians.
