Theatrical profession. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (B.P.O.E.) was founded in New York City in 1868 by members of the theatrical profession. Later, men in other professions were permitted to join the social organization. The letters E.L.K. are repeated in the titles of some of its officers, such as Esteemed Leading Knight, Esteemed Loyal Knight.
