Colonel Kit Carson led the attack in the first Battle of Adobe Walls on November 26, 1864. Carson, leading a column of 335 officers and men of the 1st New Mexico Volunteer Cavalry, surprised an encampment of Kiowa Indians on the site of adobe buildings on the South Canadian River in Texas. After routing the Kiowa, Carson?s forces were counterattacked by hundreds of Comanches from nearby villages and forced to retreat.
