I was the perfect candidate to read Michael De-la-Noy’s Scott of the Antarctic. Beyond the most basic details, I knew little about Scott, and De-la-Noy’s vivid biography provided me with an ideal introduction to his short but eventful life. He includes excerpts from Scott’s diary and often allows his subject’s words to speak for themselves. His description of the fateful expedition that claimed the explorer’s life in 1912 ends with Scott’s desperate last words: “We shall stick it out to the end, but we are getting weaker, of course, and the end cannot be far. It seems a pity but I do not think I can write more….”
