During the retreat from North Korea’s Chosin Reservoir on Nov. 28, 1950, Pvt. Hector A. Cafferata Jr. twice found himself defend- ing wounded fellow Marines against Chinese assaults. Despite multiple wounds, Cafferata held until the enemy withdrew, only afterward noticing he had fought all night in 6 inches of snow without his boots.
