Stand-up Battle: The Battle of Brawner’s Farm on August 28, 1862, pitted ranks of opposing infantry standing no more than 75 yards apart. General Gibbon recalled that, “The most terrific musketry fire I have ever listened to rolled along those two lines of battle…neither side yielding a foot.” Gibbon’s brigade lost 133 killed, 539 wounded, and 79 missing out of a total of 1,800 men.
