The British force was defeated by sheer numbers, but several mistakes were made prior to the engagement, including not building any sort of defensive works (wagon laager) and splitting their contingent the day before. When Britons back home learned about the battle, public support for the war soared as they sought revenge, and a larger army with more resources was sent as a result.
