Known by the European name Barbarossa, meaning Redbeard, Khayr Ad-Din was a Barbary pirate and later, as admiral of the Ottoman fleet, he united Algeria and Tunisia as military states under the Ottoman caliphate in the 1530s. Barbarossa remained one of the great figures in the court at Istanbul until his death in 1546.
