L. Frank Baum and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
Lyman Frank Baum, born May 15, 1856, had been a failed storekeeper, a reporter and, when his first children’s book was published in 1897, a traveling china salesman. Two years later, Baum teamed with poster artist William Wallace Denslow to produce Father Goose, His Book, the best-selling children’s book of the year. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1900 was the second collaboration for Baum and Denslow. This color woodcut, ‘You ought to be ashamed of yourself!’ is one of 24 full-page color plates that illustrated the first edition of the beloved children’s classic. L. Frank Baum died in 1919.
