From brazen beards and mutton chops to mustaches that defy gravity, Civil War soldiers are famed for their impressive coifs—absolutely zero high and tights as far as the eye can see. While some opted to grow and cultivate facial hair that resembled a dagger like Col. Percy Wyndham, others opted for what can only be described as “fork in the road” chic.

This March, join Historynet as we embark on our own March Madness, or Mustache Madness if you will, to find the one true beard to rule them all. Will fan favorite Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside—who rocked some impressive ‘burns look while simultaneously almost ruining the Army of the Potomac—make a deep run in the tournament? Or will he be knocked off by this year’s Cinderella story? Vote and see!

How to Enter 

Download the bracket PDF, fill it out, take a picture, and submit your Mustache Madness Bracket to news@historynet.com between 7pm, Sunday, March 13th and 11:59 pm, Wednesday, March 16th. 

From Thursday, March 17th, to Monday, April 4th, you will have a chance to vote for your favorite outrageous battle beard via Facebook polls on the Civil War Times Facebook page. On Monday, April 4th, the Civil War Times own Dana B. Shoaf and Melissa M. Winn will convene on their Facebook Live #FirstMondays to announce the winner!

If you were lucky enough to submit a perfect bracket you will walk away with a copy of a free, year-long subscription to Civil War Times and America’s Civil War magazines. And bragging rights of course.
