Maybe he’s born with it, maybe it’s hirsute.
From brazen beards and mutton chops to mustaches that defy gravity, Civil War soldiers are famed for their impressive coifs—absolutely zero high and tights as far as the eye can see. While some opted to grow and cultivate facial hair that resembled a dagger like Col. Percy Wyndham, others opted for what can only be described as “fork in the road” chic.
This March, join Historynet as we embark on our own March Madness, or Mustache Madness if you will, to find the one true beard to rule them all. Will fan favorite Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside—who rocked some impressive ‘burns look while simultaneously almost ruining the Army of the Potomac—make a deep run in the tournament? Or will he be knocked off by this year’s Cinderella story? Vote and see!
