An Indiana native who attended military school in Vermont, Robert H. Milroy began the war as colonel of the 9th Indiana Infantry and spent most of the conflict fighting in western Virginia. After the war, he moved to Washington Territory and served as an Indian agent and the superintendent of Indian Affairs. (Library of Congress)
