Bill’s Lincoln Memorial cartoon, states Jules Feiffer, exemplifies his “tragic eloquence.” There was a knowledge of tragedy within himself and in his own life, in what he had lived through in the war, before the war, and after the war. He had soul, and it came through in all of the work. (Copyright © 1963 by Bill Mauldin. Courtesy of Bill Mauldin Estate LLC.)
