Joseph Smith, who founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, was born in Sharon, Vermont, in December 23, 1805, when he was 25 years old. The idea for the 50-foot-tall monument was conceived by LDS leader Junius F. Wells during a visit to the birthplace in 1884.
