Anti-aircraft guns. The small guns on German tanks of 1940 couldn’t penetrate the thick armor of British Matilda II tanks. Only the arrival of 88mm AA guns with armor-piercing shells halted the breakout. The Germans had used this tactic with 88s in Spain, but this event in France might be called the point at which the 88 became a dominant gun in the German arsenal.
