Penobscot Bay, Maine. Some 40 vessels mounting 350 guns were assembled for the "Penobscot Expedition" to seize a fort the British were building. The poorly led and badly coordinated expedition failed to seize the small earthen-work fortification, were driven off after two weeks by a smaller British fleet, and wound up scuttling all its ships except for one that had been captured.
