CWTP-191000-SURRENDER-03 copy

Despite the shellfire that rained down on Fort Sumter for hours (top), the only Union casualty was Daniel Hough. The native of Ireland died when his cannon prematurely discharged as he helped fire a salute while the United States flag was lowered during the surrender. The surviving members of the garrison, including Major Anderson, boarded the steamer Baltic (above) for the trip to New York City. Anderson, exhausted by the siege, traveled poorly.
