Port Arthur. Russian control of the warm-water Port Arthur became a hindrance to Japanese plans to control parts of Manchuria and Korea. The opening battles of the war were fought at Port Arthur in February 1904. Ultimately, the Japanese triumphed over the Russians and secured their interests in the region.
