William J. Fetterman. Fetterman boasted that if he, instead of Col. Henry B. Carrington, were in command at Ft. Kearny, he could defeat the Sioux. On Dec. 21, 1866, a wood train approaching the fort was attacked. Fetterman led a relief party of 80 men and chased away the attacking indians. Disobeying orders to not go beyond Lodge Trail Ridge, he and his entire command were wiped out. It became known as the "Fetterman Massacre."
