Samuel Goldwyn (1879-1974) was born Schmuel Gelbfisz in Warsaw. At an early age he made his way to England where he Anglicized his name to Samuel Goldfish. He moved to New York in 1899, becoming a naturalized citizen in 1902 as Samuel Goldwyn. With Jesse L. Lasky and Adolph Zukor he formed Paramount Pictures. Among his discoveries were director Cecil B. De Mille and actor Gary Cooper. He became an independent producer noted for quality films such as The Best Years of Our Lives and Wuthering Heights.
