Months before the 150th anniversary commemorations at Gettysburg, the Civil War Times staff decided it was important to be on hand. All of us were excited about going, but as the battle anniversary dates drew closer, that decision seemed questionable. The pace in our office had been frenetic: A steady stream of special issues, regular issues and subscriber premiums had presented us with numerous deadlines in succession. The October issue would have to ship to the printer right before we were supposed to head for Pennsylvania. How could we meet our printer deadlines and still make it to Gettysburg in time to see everything?

Happily, we managed to do just that. We spent four fantastic days, June 30 to July 3, at our tent on Seminary Ridge, provided by the fine folks at the new Seminary Ridge Museum. Scores of subscribers, scholars, reenactors, buffs and youngsters came by our HQ to say hello—and inspire each and every one of us with their palpable passion for the Civil War and Gettysburg.

To produce the magazine, we have to spend most of our time in our Leesburg, Va., office. That’s necessary, of course, but it usually keeps us away from the battlefields, sites and people that we really love to discover. While the days we spent on Seminary Ridge this summer were long and busy, they were also exhilarating. Without question, the best part of our Gettysburg experience was meeting and talking with so many of our readers. Thanks for stopping by.
