As No. 588, Klette’s Wild Hares, went over the target, her bombardier could not see the aiming point. Squadron leader Lt. Col. Immanuel Klette ordered the rest of the unit’s pilots to make another pass over the target—unaware that many had already dropped their bombs. When some pilots broke formation rather than hazard another pass through the flak-filled skies over Pilsen, Klette labeled them cowards. ( Chart by Eve Steccati)
