1877. Thomas Edison recorded the nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb” on a sheet of tinfoil. In 1888, he developed a solid wax-cylinder recorder. By 1897 Edison had created the National Phonograph Company and was mass-producing cylinder recordings.
