Los Angeles. Mason had walked behind her owners’ wagon train from Mississippi to Utah then onto Los Angeles. In Los Angeles, she petitioned the court for her freedom and won. Using her earnings as a mid-wife, she bought land which later became choice real estate. When she died in 1891, she left an estate of $300,000.
