Although he was a slave, James Armistead served as an army spy during this war.
American Revolutionary War. With his owner’s permission, Armistead joined the Continental Army. He was placed under General Lafayette’s command. Lafayette assigned him to spy duties. Armstead’s reports led directly to the Continental Army’s victory at Yorktown. With help from Lafayette, Armistead won his freedom in 1787.
