The New York subway system began to use tokens in this year.
1953. When the subway fare went from 10 cents to 15 cents the mass transit system, rather than use a multiple coin drop systems, issued tokens instead. The tokens were purchased for 15 cents and were the only coins accepted by the turnstile system.
